Have you ever done a Google search to find out what someone looks like and when you meet them in person they look nothing like the headshot you say online? Well! I have, more than once.
The issue is that many of us, as humans, develop sentimental attachments to things, even digital photos of ourselves. However, having a headshot online that looks nothing like you do currently can be misleading. It can also cause distrust between you and the people you want to do business with (they may be wondering “What else are you not telling me?”).
To prevent you from any such embarrassment and build trust with clients here are 3 signs you can look for to know whether or not it’s time to update your current headshot:
1. Physical Changes
If you have noticeable physical changes it’s time to update your headshot. Whether you’ve cut your hair off or you’ve dropped a few pounds, embrace the new look. Introduce people to the new you.
2. It’s a Selfie
The lens of most cellphone cameras can potentially distort facial features; making things like your nose or forehead larger. Get a professional headshot; photographers will use lenses that capture your beauty without drastically distorting your features.
3. It’s a Cropped Group Photo
A cropped group picture for a headshot is likely to show an awkward posture as you would have been interacting with other people in the photo; possibly leaning on or hugging someone. You also run the risk of having a low-resolution image after cropping, making your headshot look cheap.
I know I said 3 but here is a bonus…
- It’s Your Graduation Photo
Using your graduation photo as a profile photo on websites like LinkedIn says that you are inexperienced. Yes, recruiters can identify you but does it give them confidence that you’re the best fit for their organization? Having a professional headshot can impact how competent people think you are.
Over the years I’ve found that most clients update their headshots every 2-3 years, however you can update your headshot as often as you need to. Remember your headshot (whether it’s used on your website, in marketing material, print publication or on social media) is your digital handshake, your first impression, so make it memorable – in a good way 😉.
