Did I tell you about the time I put on makeup? Well … As a part of my workflow, I’ll send clients an email outlining the importance of doing full coverage makeup as the camera reduces its appearance. Armed with this knowledge, I went to a pharmacy and bought what I thought was the right foundation and an application brush as I prepared to film the pilot episode of my online series Tipsy. Let’s just say that my attempts paled in comparison to having my makeup done professionally (no I don’t have a photo of my epic fail π).
I strongly recommend that clients get their makeup done professionally. I’ll even go as far as to refer or book a makeup artist for clients.
However, not all clients understand the importance of having their makeup done and may opt for no makeup or everyday makeup not realizing that the camera (and flash) minimizes the appearance of makeup.
With this in mind, I spoke with Sharon Wint-Levy (SWL), owner and operator of Face Forward Cosmetics. Through Face Forward Cosmetics Sharon provides beauty products, professional makeup service & training for aspiring makeup artists. Here is what Sharon had to say:
Q: Should females do photoshoots barefaced?
SWL: No, that’s like a painting without a frame. You need a complete look. Outfit and face. The face brings off the clothing and the full package brings off the photographer’s finished look that is being captured.
Q: If the person has never worn makeup before what would be the approach you would take?
SWL: The approach would be to ensure the application is not overdone so that the client feels comfortable. This however can be addressed by a verbal consultation before the application.
Q: What would be your word of caution to those who insist on doing their own makeup; possibly from a YouTube video?
SWL: In doing your own makeup you may miss details required for the look you are trying to create. Additionally, each face is different, hence it’s not “a one size fits all”. Makeup application is created based on face shape, type of skin and the occasion. The person on YouTube may require more definition and structure, whereas that may not apply to you. Not everyone can replicate looks from videos.
Q: What is the number one reason you’d encourage someone to book a professional makeup artist for their photoshoot?
SWL: The number one reason is a professional makeup artist is not only trained to apply flawless makeup but is also skilled in the artistry of the application. You want your photos to be timeless. Professionals will capture the perfect look based on your shape face, types of products suitable for your skin, the occasion, lighting and location.
Q: What’s the is the one most important thing you share with your students when teaching them about doing makeup? The golden rule if you will?
SWL: Makeup should enhance your features. It shouldn’t change the way you look. Nothing should stand out. Persons should see the total look and know that it is beautiful. To achieve this, apply your makeup in zones. Each zone requires a different application. Look for highlight and lowlight areas. Always remember to blend.
Q: What’s the most common thing clients say after you’ve finished doing their makeup?
SWL: “Oh my God! Is that me?!” or “Wow! I really love this.”
The long and short of it is that booking a professional makeup artist ensures that the right products are used on your skin to accentuate features and hide unwanted blemishes that the camera may pick up. It’s one less thing to worry about and ensures that you get the put your “best face forward” (I know it’s a likkle clichΓ© π).
Like Sharon, one of the most common things I’ve heard women say after getting their makeup done before a shoot is “Wow!” in amazement. They then walk in front of the camera exuding confidence which translates in every photo.
